Meeqat Map & 5 Miqat Points for Umrah: Meaning & USA Flight Guide
What Miqat means, where the five Miqat points are, how far each is from Makkah, and what to do on a flight from the United States.
Last updated: 1 October 2026 · Miqat guide for Umrah pilgrims flying from JFK, IAH, ORD & LAX
Miqat is the boundary around Makkah that a person intending Umrah or Hajj may not cross without Ihram. There are five Miqat points: Dhul Hulaifah, Al-Juhfah, Qarn al-Manazil, Yalamlam and Dhat Irq. Pilgrims flying from the USA to Jeddah should be in Ihram before the plane passes Al-Juhfah (Rabigh) in the air. Pilgrims landing in Madinah first enter Ihram at Dhul Hulaifah (Bir Ali) when leaving for Makkah.
1. Miqat Meaning & Islamic Significance
The Arabic word ميقات (Miqat, also spelled Meeqat) literally means an appointed time or place. In Islamic law, miqat for Umrah and Hajj means the geographical boundaries set by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Anyone who intends Hajj or Umrah and approaches Makkah from outside these boundaries must enter Ihram at or before them.
The ruling is recorded in the authentic hadith collections of Bukhari and Muslim: the Prophet ﷺ fixed Miqat points for the people of Madinah, the Levant, Najd and Yemen, and they apply both to those living in those directions and to anyone passing through them intending Hajj or Umrah. Entering Ihram at the Miqat is a mark of respect for the sanctity of Makkah: the pilgrim leaves behind ordinary dress and worldly concerns and begins the rites in a state of devotion.
2. Meeqat Map & Distance Matrix: The 5 Miqat Points in Islam
The map below shows the five miqat points around Makkah by direction. It is a schematic, not to scale. The table gives approximate distances.
Schematic only. Positions show direction from Makkah, not exact distance or geography.
| Miqat | Distance from Makkah | Direction & location | Who uses it / flight relevance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dhul Hulaifah (ذو الحليفة, Abyar Ali / Bir Ali) | ≈ 450 km (280 mi) | North of Makkah, a short drive south of Madinah | People of Madinah and pilgrims who arrive in Madinah first, including US pilgrims landing at MED |
| Al-Juhfah (الجحفة, near Rabigh) | ≈ 183 km (114 mi) | North-west of Makkah | Pilgrims from the west and north-west: North America, Europe, Syria and Turkey. The usual aerial reference for US flights to Jeddah |
| Qarn al-Manazil (قرن المنازل, As-Sayl al-Kabir) | ≈ 75 km (47 mi) | East of Makkah, towards Taif | Najd and Riyadh travellers; may be the aligned point on some routes via the Gulf |
| Yalamlam (يلملم, As-Sa'diyyah) | ≈ 92 km (57 mi) | South of Makkah | Yemen and South Asian routes; may be the aligned point on some flight paths |
| Dhat Irq (ذات عرق) | ≈ 94 km (58 mi) | North-east of Makkah | Iraq and the east; rarely relevant for US itineraries |
Distances are approximate and vary slightly by source and route. For flights, the Miqat is not a spot on the ground you can see but the point where the aircraft is level with it, so the airline's moving map and the crew announcement are your practical guide.
3. The 5 Miqat Locations in Detail
Dhul Hulaifah (Abyar Ali / Bir Ali)
The Miqat of Madinah, and the farthest from Makkah. It is home to the Masjid Dhul Hulaifah, where pilgrims shower, pray two rak'ahs and enter Ihram. US pilgrims who fly to Madinah first normally use it on the way to Makkah.
Al-Juhfah (Rabigh)
The Miqat for people coming from the north-west. The original village of Al-Juhfah no longer exists as a settlement, so today pilgrims enter Ihram at Rabigh, which lies in line with it. For pilgrims flying from the USA, Canada and Europe to Jeddah, this is generally the Miqat to be in Ihram for.
Qarn al-Manazil (As-Sayl al-Kabir)
The Miqat for those coming from Najd, on the road between Makkah and Taif. It is the closest of the five to Makkah.
Yalamlam (As-Sa'diyyah)
The Miqat for those coming from Yemen and the south. Travellers on South Asian routes by sea or some flight paths are aligned with it.
Dhat Irq
The Miqat for those coming from Iraq and the east. Reports differ on whether it was named directly by the Prophet ﷺ or fixed by Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) in line with the Prophet's ﷺ guidance. Scholars agree it is a valid Miqat.
4. Inflight Miqat Guide for US Pilgrims (JFK, IAH, ORD, LAX)
Landing in Madinah first (MED)
You do not enter Ihram on the plane. Stay in normal clothes, perform Ziyarah in Madinah, and assume Ihram at Dhul Hulaifah (Bir Ali) before leaving for Makkah.
Landing in Jeddah first (JED)
You must be in Ihram before the aircraft crosses the Al-Juhfah aerial line. Whether your flight is direct or connects through Doha, Dubai or Istanbul, the steps are the same:
- Before leaving: Trim nails, shower, and apply any scent to your body at this stage, as it is only prohibited once Ihram begins.
- At the departure airport or a layover: Men put on the two unstitched sheets before boarding the Jeddah-bound flight. Wearing them is not yet Ihram. Women wear modest ordinary clothing.
- In the air: Watch the flight map. Make Niyyah ("Labbayk Allahumma Umrah") and begin the Talbiyah before the Miqat, usually when the crew announces it. Do not rely on the announcement alone; set a phone alarm and ask the crew early.
- After landing: Continue in Ihram to Makkah and keep reciting the Talbiyah until you begin Tawaf.
5. Common Mistakes & Penalty (Dam) for Crossing Miqat Without Ihram
Common mistakes
- Staying in normal clothes through the Miqat, planning to change in Jeddah
- Thinking that wearing the sheets means Ihram has begun
- Wearing socks or closed shoes (men) or perfumed wipes after Niyyah
- Sleeping through the Miqat with no alarm
- Covering the head (men) with a blanket or hood
The Dam ruling
- Passing a Miqat intending Umrah without Ihram is a violation
- If you return to a Miqat and enter Ihram before beginning the rites, the majority of scholars say no Dam is due
- If you do not, a Dam is due: a sheep or goat given to the poor in the Haram area
- Jeddah lies inside the Miqat, so Ihram there on arrival from abroad needs a Dam
Details differ between the schools of thought, so please ask a qualified scholar if you have already crossed the Miqat.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the literal and Islamic meaning of Miqat (Meeqat)?
Literally, Miqat (Meeqat) means an appointed time or place. In Islamic law it refers to the geographical boundaries fixed by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ around Makkah. A person intending Hajj or Umrah must not pass them towards Makkah without being in a state of Ihram.
What are the 5 primary Miqat points for Umrah?
The five Miqat points are Dhul Hulaifah (Abyar Ali) for Madinah, Al-Juhfah (Rabigh) for the north-west, Qarn al-Manazil (As-Sayl al-Kabir) for Najd, Yalamlam (As-Sa'diyyah) for the south and Yemen direction, and Dhat Irq for the north-east and Iraq direction.
Which Miqat point applies to flights originating from the United States?
Flights from the United States to Jeddah approach from the west or north-west, so pilgrims usually treat Al-Juhfah (Rabigh) as the reference Miqat. The exact alignment depends on the flight path, so follow the crew's announcement and ask a qualified scholar. If you land in Madinah first, your Miqat is Dhul Hulaifah.
How far are the various Miqat points located from Makkah?
Approximate distances are: Dhul Hulaifah about 450 km (280 miles), Al-Juhfah about 183 km (114 miles), Qarn al-Manazil about 75 km (47 miles), Yalamlam about 92 km (57 miles), and Dhat Irq about 94 km (58 miles). Figures vary slightly by source and road route.
Where is the aerial Miqat line crossed when flying directly to Jeddah?
There is no single fixed point for every airline. For flights from the US the aircraft usually becomes level with Al-Juhfah (the Rabigh area) shortly before descending to Jeddah, often around 30 to 45 minutes before landing. Use the moving map and the crew announcement, and make Niyyah before that line is crossed.
Do I need to enter Ihram at Miqat if landing in Madinah first?
No Ihram is needed on the plane if you land in Madinah first. Stay in normal clothes, visit the Prophet's Mosque, and enter Ihram at Dhul Hulaifah (Bir Ali) when you leave Madinah for Makkah.
What happens if a pilgrim crosses the Miqat boundary without Ihram?
According to the majority of scholars, the pilgrim should return to a Miqat and enter Ihram there before starting the rites. If this is not done, a Dam is due: a sheep or goat offered in the Haram area and given to the poor. Consult a qualified scholar about your case.
Can US pilgrims wear Ihram garments at departure airports (JFK, ORD, IAH)?
Yes. Putting on the two unstitched sheets does not by itself start Ihram. Restrictions begin only when you make Niyyah and recite the Talbiyah, which most pilgrims do in the air shortly before the Miqat.
Is Jeddah a Miqat?
No. Jeddah lies inside the Miqat boundary. According to the majority of scholars, a pilgrim arriving from abroad who enters Ihram only in Jeddah owes a Dam. Residents of Jeddah and Makkah enter Ihram from where they live.
